Kernel 3.9.11 and directfb

I have IGEPv2 board with Kernel 3.9.11 using omap2plus_defconfig - no modules compiled or loaded. Busybox and DirectFB have been loaded and work correctly on qemu but will not work on IGEPv2

IGEPv2 boots fine and busybox works but I get the following message in DirectFB when running tests

(#) DirectFBError [dfb->CreateSurface( dfb, &dsc, &primary )]: Not supported!


I think it must be in my kernel configuration. I basically configured "module m to yes y" in Graphics Support. I get absolutely no response out of my HDMI connected Samsung display terminal (although it works on separate IGEPv2 board with ISEE default software).

The details (cut and paste) are below:
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am quite stuck.

Q1 Can I configure the display terminal to be a console so I can see console messages on it as well as my serial port. Then at least I know the display terminal works

Q2 Suggestions on getting DirectFB working?

I T W O R K S ! ! !

Thanks so so much Manel. I would never have figured through this on my own. I used the 1280x720. I am watching penguins march in the df_andi application now. I really appreciate your superb support. If you ever need a reference, let me know.

My plan is to get SDL working on IGEPv2 and then hook up my gps and e-compass to the GPIO's to create a hiking gps prototype.

    About the first question this is the default configuration in the IGEPv2 board with our distribution, so what distribution are you using?

    About the second question probably you need the OpenGL es libraries or support for use it ...

    Q1 - I have 2 IGEPv2 boards.

    Board #1 = the default configuration supplied by ISEE: serial port works. Starts the video display with VOUT which is part of multimedia modules and the V4L2 Driver. This is my backup board in case I brick board #2 below. It is not part of my development.

    Board #2 = my configuration. I have erased flash memory and replaced it with linux3.9.11 compiled with omap2plus_defconfig and no modules compiled in. This is where video display does not work. VOUT is not helpful since I want Fbdev driver not V4L2 drivers. It is Board #2 I need help with. The above shows my configuration changes for frame buffering (Fbdev drivers)


    Q2 - DirectFB seems fine with all the correct libraries etc installed. I have it working in QEMU. But when QEMU is replaced by IGEPv2 to run the identical setup, it fails.

    The TI Wiki link (attached) diagram helps show the problem. The IGEPv2 works with V4L2 drivers but does not work with Frame Buffer FBDev Drivers in my case.

    Good morning Mano

    I have searched far and wide and have no idea how to fix my clock misconfiguration error in 3.9.11. I am just using omap2plus_defconfig and changing the modules to Yes in the frame buffer options. Does anyone have any suggestions????

    So.... I decided to try to get 2.6.37 working with DirectFB on my IGEPv2. I cloned "git clone git://git.isee.biz/pub/scm/linux-omap-2.6.git" as you suggested but it won't compile.

    The git had no .config file so......

    I tried "make omap2plus_defconfig && make" but it won't compile

When I tried "make omap2plus_defconfig && make && make modules && make modules_install INSTALL_MOD_PATH=/mytarget" -- it tried restart my configuration ????? I have no idea why ???? ....


    I know I am probably missing something obvious in all this -.....

    (1) Could you tell me where I could find the ISEE configuration for 2.6.37 that works with frame buffers and HDMI connection? I can then start with that and work from there.
    (2) Why won't my modules install? What am I forgetting?
    (3) How does one fix a clock misconfiguration?

    Here you've the build instructions: http://labs.isee.biz/index.php/Linux_Kernel_2.6.37.y

    If you use the git repo then after download the sources you should switch the right branch as:

    git checkout -b linux-2.6.37.y


    The configuration file is named: igep00x0_defconfig

    And you must to configure the kernel before try to build it as:

    make ARCH=arm igep00x0_defconfig


    So what compiler version are you using ?

    Good Morning Manel

    Thank you very much for all your help to date!!!!!

    Linux-omap-2.6.37-6 now compiles. Thanks so much. But during the kernel boot process, the 2.6.37 cannot connect to the nfs root filesytem (my 3.9.11 kernel finds and uses it ok). The kernel message is:

    the linux boot sequence for both is attached.
    I compared the 2 configurations (2.6.37 vs 3.9.11) for nfs client:
    CONFIG_NETWORK_FILESYSTEMS=y for both
    CONFIG_NFS_FS=y for both
    CONFIG_NFS_V2=y for 3.9.11 only ==> missing in 2.6.37 .... is that a problem?
    CONFIG_NFS_V3=y for both
    CONFIG_NFS_V3_ACL=y for both
    CONFIG_NFS_V4=y for both
    CONFIG_ROOT_NFS=y for both

    On the host I am using Ubuntu 1.2.6-3 nfs-kernel-server and nfs-common downloaded via apt-get.

    my /etc/exports are unchanged for the 2 kernels and the ip addresses of server and client seem ok so I don't think that is an issue.

    I saw on isee website (petej aug 2012) a similar issue caused by rootfs looking for dhcp due to problems in /etc/network/interfaces. I don't think that is my situation.

    The only other thing I can think of is that my boot args are somehow being overwritten by 2.6.37 (but not by 3.9.11). I notice on isee website there are igep.ini files that seem to work as kernel boot args. Not sure how that works of if it is a problem.

    Hi Manel

    My IGEPv2 is a direct ethernet cord connect so there is no gateway or gateway ip. My WLAN1 gateway is 192.168.1.1 but IGEPv2 probably does not use that.

    I have tried

    ip=192.168.0.100:192.168.0.1::255.255.255.0::eth0:

    and various combinations but the results are the same -

    Thanks for your help...2.6.37 now boots fine.

    The hdmi/dvi conection still does not seem to work yet. The display terminal is totally unresponsive.

    I tried 2 tests - directfb program df_drivertest downloaded with the software, and a c program from a Raspberry Pi tutorial on directFB. It seems /dev/fb0 is set up properly but won't move data to the screen via HDMI

    Do you see anything in the monitor during the boot ?

    640x400 is not a standard hdmi resolution I suggest you change it to other like 1280x720 or 1024x768
